Foster Care Assessments

Foster Care Assessments support the identification and authorisation of carers who can provide safe, stable, and nurturing care for children and young people who are unable to remain with their birth families. At Childfirst Australia, we assess the capacity of prospective foster carers to meet the complex emotional, developmental, and behavioural needs of children who have experienced trauma, ensuring decisions are guided by the child’s best interests and long-term wellbeing.

“Safe care is built on stability, understanding, and the capacity to meet children where they are.”

Childfirst Australia provides comprehensive Foster Care Assessments aligned with statutory requirements and recognised assessment frameworks, including Step-by-Step and Form F models where applicable. Our assessments evaluate applicants’ motivation, parenting experience, emotional resilience, support networks, household safety, and ability to provide trauma-informed care. We undertake in-depth interviews, home environment assessments, background and reference checks, and collateral consultations to develop balanced, evidence-based recommendations suitable for agency and court use.

Our practitioners approach each assessment with professionalism and respect, recognising the responsibility carers undertake and the vulnerability of the children entering care. While supporting applicants through the assessment process, we maintain a clear focus on safeguarding children, promoting stability, and ensuring placements are capable of meeting both immediate and long-term care needs.
